Jobseekers wise up to social media

Jobseekers have woken up to the potential for employers to check them out on social networking sites, according to a recent report. Only 3 our of 24,000 candidates whose CV's impressed potential employers failed to secure a job due to Facebook faux pas. This is down from 23 out of 24,000 3 years ago. The report also suggests that it is accountancy and management consultancy candidates who are most likely to slip up, being less aware of the power of social media.

However, many people forget that it isn't just the incriminating photos of your last night out on Facebook that might put off potential employers. Poor spelling and grammar can also put a red flag above candidate's names. Consider the e-mail address that you use for corresponding about jobs as well - 'sexyminx101@hotmail.com' was fine for your friends a few years ago, but with free e-mail accounts available it really does pay to set up something more appropriate. So don't just check your privacy settings on your social networking pages, double check everything on your CV to ensure a good first impression.
